Pamela Challis is a printmaker of consummate skill with an ability to translate her beliefs into her work.  For Pamela, the basis of her work is her strong faith in the Scriptural writings, and she sources imagery from the natural world to convey her sense of wonder at the energy forces which drive its ongoing regeneration, showing us there is spirituality to be found in our environment.  Whilst today this may seem an unpopular choice, for Pamela it is the force behind her practice and the inspiration and solace of her philosophy.  Pamela deftly works within the relief and intaglio mediums and has been working for many years in the medium of woodcut prints.  The surface of wooden blocks are hand carved and are printed either by hand with a Japanese baren tool or using a press.  The images are then collaged achieving a unique result in each print.  Pamela’s collagraphs are fine examples of the potential of the this medium.

Pamela was born in Collaroy, NSW and trained as a painter in Sydney at The National Art School. She went on to complete an Associate Diploma in Printmaking under Jorg Schmeisser at the Canberra School of Art . Pamela was an active member of the Studio One National Print Workshop and was included in many of their portfolios.  She has participated in numerous exhibitions, and has specialised in the production of fine handmade artist books.  Her work is represented widely across Australia, in collections such as the National Gallery of Australia, State Library of NSW (Mitchell Library), Artbank and the FAI collection, Sydney.
