Involved in her ceramic practice for thirty years, Queensland artist Johanna De Maine has explored the concept of the vessel and developed a fine sense of proportion over this time.  Her vessels feature intricate designs and surfaces that are the result of constant experimentation with precious metals and multiple lustre firings.   Researching the work of Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, Johanna has captured the same sensuality of form and stylisation, with both the inner and outer surfaces of her vessels decorated with a complexity of symbolic patterning.  This rich surface treatment raises the forms into the realms of the iconic and the ceremonial, and articulates Johanna’s reverence for the landscape on which many of her designs are based, around the Glasshouse Mountains of the Queensland Sunshine Coast hinterland.

Over the past twenty years Johanna has had numerous solo exhibitions, and has taken part in over forty group shows.  Major commissions include the Sheraton Breakwater Casino, Townsville, Sheraton Hotel, Brisbane and the Boyd Gallery complex.  Her work is represented in collections in the USA, UK, Germany, Singapore and Hong Kong.
