Maureen Williams is a widely respected artist at the forefront of Australian glass practice and renowned for her innovative designs and techniques. She uses high temperature enamel paint to express real and imaginary views for her abstract paintings on glass. For the blown works, the making process involves initially creating a glass blank which is cooled and intricately painted. This is then reheated, picked up on the blowing iron and covered several times with clear glass. With the cast works, Maureen paints a flat section of glass which then has the clear glass cast over it, followed by extensive coldworking. These processes enable the paint to be protected and trapped within the glass, achieving great depth of colour and tone beneath the smooth surface.In terms of the philosophy behind her work, Maureen states that she explores “…the path that we take throughout lives, the land and our relationships. Both real and imaginary views of the land and ourselves within it create fragments of a sense of place and being.”
Maureen Williams studied at the Chisholm Institute of Technology majoring in hot glass and has taught various workshops in Melbourne. She has travelled extensively in Europe and America where she has attended international glass conferences and the Pilchuck glass schools. Maureen has had numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Australia and overseas with work collected by many institutions including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Art Gallery of South Australia, Art Gallery of Queensland, Artbank and Die NeueSammlung Museum (Munich, Germany).
