This collection was created to coincide with the 2019 DESIGN Canberra Festival and its theme of Utopia. Entitled the ‘Frangipani Series’, each piece bears minute engravings showcasing the different names of Frangipani from a variety of cultures. The layers of meaning contained within the text, and the delicate reflection of light across the surface reward close inspection of this exquisite jewellery. Belinda Newick is a studio-based jeweller and metalsmith whose work explores cultural hybridity and diversity, as well as the connections between people and place. Inspired by the rich experience of traveling and her interest in other cultures, Belinda uses words from many languages as a decorative element in her work. Belinda’s fine silver jewellery features a combination of traditional hand-crafting techniques and modern computer engraving processes. Lines of miniscule text are etched across the surfaces of her small-scale work and acts as “…an intimate invitation, a subtle gesture to draw the wearer or viewer closer”.
Born in Perth, Belinda completed her Bachelor of Arts in Jewellery and 3D Design/Sculpture at Curtin University of Technology, Perth, in 1995. In 2000, Belinda was the recipient of a SAYAB Project Assistance Grant for an artist residency in Kerala, India, followed by an Asialink residency to Sri Lanka in 2004. She has exhibited in solo exhibitions and group shows both in Australia and overseas, including SOFA 2004 in Chicago; the Australian Tactile Art Prize at Object Galleries, Sydney; and Belinda was one of eight designers included in “Medalling”, an exhibition at RMIT Gallery as part of the 2006 Festival of Melbourne. Belinda was the winner of the Lynne Kosky Award for Contemporary Jewellery in the 2019 Victorian Craft Awards for her stainless steel and sterling silver piece, ‘Hope’.
