about the exhibition
Annette Blair’s glass sculptures explore the ideas of identity and personal narrative. ‘Held within’ brings together two series of work, the ‘Still life’ and the ‘As You Left It’ series. Exploring the transparency of glass, Annette’s ‘Still life’ series uses collections of objects as the canvas, painting layers within the piece. Works from the ‘As You Left It’ series capture domestic tableaux, preserving groups of simple objects underneath a dome as “precious reminders of the hands that held them.” The artist says of her work:“I am interested in how we associate people with everyday domestic objects and how these forms have an ability to evoke a common or shared nostalgia. By using these familiar items from the home, shed and garden I attempt to engage the viewer, bringing their own experiences to the work, while at the same time, removing and preserving their simple functions.” Although she draws from her own memories, Annette expresses universal qualities of character capturedwithin herexquisite glass sculptures.
