Victor Greenaway has established a firm reputation as an outstanding studio ceramicist, producing fine porcelain of exceptional quality. Currently residing in Italy, Victor finds continuing inspiration in the many exceptional works of art located within the country’s many major museums. For example, his recent works are influenced by the forms of ancient Italian Etruscan art. Victor’s large stemmed open bowls reflect his abiding interest in the culture’s love for sculptural ritual vessels with decorative markings. Victor’s studio remains in the Gippsland area where he continues to draw inspiration from the lakes and coastal waters of the region. In these recent works, Victor combines celadon glazes with porcelain, allowing light to pass through linear markings and along the form’s fine edges.
Victor Greenaway has been creating studio ceramics in Australia for more than thirty years and has gained national and international recognition. In 1999, Victor received an Arts Victoria grant to assist in taking an exhibition of work to Italy and to produce an accompanying bi-lingual catalogue. This was augmented by provision of a Fellowship awarded by International Specialist Skills (ISS), Victoria in 1999 to assist with the program in Italy. In 2000, Victor was awarded a prestigious two-year Australia Council Fellowship in recognition of his contribution to Australian ceramics. His work is represented widely in public and private collections within Australia and overseas including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Parliament House, Seto Ceramic Institute (Japan), Museum for Modern Keramik (Germany) and the Museo della Ceramica (Italy).
