Ceramic artist Chris Harman explores notions of structure, scale, texture and space. Fascinated with plant forms such as cacti, succulents and fungi, Chris compares his work to these specimens which are intricately detailed when viewed up close. Often creating a deceptive defiance of gravity, Chris’ ceramics remind the viewer of the delicate and fragile balance of nature that is behind all life. Masterfully engineered using multiple elements connected to an internal skeleton, Chris aims to create elegant works using refined forms which embody a more complex aesthetic. It is the provocative and sometimes confronting nature of his work that, for Chris as an artist, evokes childhood memories, reminding him of the innocence and joy felt during play and explorations of nature.
Chris moved from the USA to Australia where he developed his glass working and ceramic skills completing his Bachelor of Visual Arts at the Australian National University in 2003. Since then, Chris has worked in studios alongside glass artists, Matthew Curtis and Richard Whitely, whilst maintaining local involvement in glassworking and ceramics. Chris has exhibited in a number of group exhibitions across Australia as well as in Germany and the United States. He has been the recipient of several awards in Canberra including the Doug Alexander Premier Award and the Walkers Ceramics Prize.
