Peter Johnson's hand built ceramic containers feature pictorial surfaces that describe the urban landscape in which he lives. These large vessels are often double walled, reinforcing a sense of scale and firmly grounding the forms. Using coloured slips and glazes, the surface imagery conveys a sense of nostalgia, acknowledging the changes that have occurred within his physical environment. “The transformation of our urban landscape can stimulate emotional and psychological responses as we move past or stop to consider. People can perceive these experiences differently and attach their own personal significance through memories, identity and familiarity.”
Peter Johnson received a Bachelor of Design in Ceramics and Glass from the University of South Australia in 1987 and a Master of Fine Art from Monash University in 2005. He has held eight solo exhibitions, and participated in over twenty-five group shows. In 1993 he was the recipient of an Australia Council residency in Barcelona, Spain, and in 2000 received the Port Parade Award from the City of Port Adelaide, South Australia. His work is represented in the collections of the Queensland University of Technology, University of South Australia, University of Southern Queensland, University of Western Sydney and Artbank.
