Caitlin’s work is concerned with the intricacies of intimate relationships. She explores contemporary issues such as self image, identity and notions of physical beauty through her drawings and sculptures. The animal and hybrid forms she explores are visually humorous and invite the viewer to further explore the complexity of elements - whether it be narrative, sinister or ambiguous. Caitlin produces bold, high contrast monochrome images that are in themselves a complex relationship between a rampant imagination and a very disciplined and precise tonal drawing technique. Caitlin has used and developed the rabbit form over the last eight years to accentuate the emotional content of her figurative work. The figures are intended to be initially comical and their circumstances a little absurd, in order to encourage the viewer to engage further with the narrative sequence. It is this ambiguity punctuating the visual readings that surprises the viewer into an immediate and honest response, and is one of the definitive qualities of Caitlin’s work.
Born in Canberra, Caitlin Perriman completed her Bachelor of Arts at the Canberra School of Art. Upon graduation, she was awarded the prestigious Peter and Lena Karmel Anniversary Award for Art. She has also studied sculpture in Ireland and has participated in more than 20 group exhibitions throughout Australia.
