about the exhibition
The rug project is an exciting collaboration between Beaver Galleries, Isabella Holding and a selected group of our significant Canberra artists. Through her “Weave Art Change” initiative, Isabella works with Nepalese weavers to create fair trade certified hand woven artist carpets. Not only do the weavers themselves receive regular work, but also a percentage of profits is directed back to education and health programs in Kathmandu. Coming from a variety of disciplines including painting, printmaking, glass and ceramics, the artists have designed works specifically to be made into hand woven floor rugs for this special Centenary of Canberra exhibition. This wonderful project invites these artists to draw upon their existing work whilst exploring the technical challenges of working in a new medium. Each rug is available in a limited edition of five, the unique design skilfully and beautifully translated by the weavers. This project is directly assisting specific programmes in the education of children with disabilities or sight loss.
